Irreversible (2002)

Events over the course of one traumatic night in Paris unfold in reverse-chronological order as the beautiful Alex is brutally raped and beaten by a stranger in the underpass.

I had no idea what this film was about prior to seeing it, and was amazed by the time I got to the end. The story seems to take us from hell to heaven and only allows us to really get to know the characters once we have already found out their disastrous fates. The more that we like the main couple, the more we have to remember what we have just witnessed previously, giving the violent acts more force.
When called for, Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci's on and off screen relationship lends their chemistry a particularly natural playfulness, but which again only leaves the no holds barred brutality all the more poignant. An extreme use of cinema, it is a highly experimental and provocative movie from the twisted mind of its writer/ director, Gaspar NoƩ.
